In my PhD thesis, I am exploring the neglected significance of metaphors of violated female bodies in modernist literature. My project challenges wide-spread critical dismissal of these images as solely symbolising wider modern issues (such as wage labour, post-war trauma, and the commodification of personal relations). Instead, I wish to analyse these scenes of violence against women as significant in their own right and examine the levels of authorial power involved in using female bodies as metaphors.
