Dr Yong Han
(Former)
Overview
Yong has an English LLB (Honours, London), a PhD in Law (Aberdeen), an LLM in international (commercial) law, and a BA in English. Since August 2015, he has been an Academic Drafting Committee member of the ongoing project UNIDROIT Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law. His publications have been cited, amongst others, by Supreme Court judges in Australasia.
Yong teaches English and international commercial law, especially sales law and related legal areas (such as carriage of goods, shipping law and cargo insurance), insurance law, private-banking law, and corporate law. Before joining Manchester in Sept 2020, he was briefly a lecturer (permanent post) at University of Bradford, also briefly a post-doctoral research assistant at University of Hull, and further back a post-doctoral fellow at the National University of Singapore.
Yong researches commercial and private law, particularly sales law, insurance law, banking-customer relations, company law, financial consumer law, ADR (arbitration and mediation), and other areas (such as tort law) closely related to insurance law. Expanding substantially from his monograph Policyholder’s Reasonable Expectations (Hart Publishing 2016), Yong’s current primary research focuses on doctrinal and potentially inter-disciplinary approaches to reasonable expectations (RE) in private/commercial law. It aims to critique or theorise the judicial (over)use of RE in contract law (and good faith), corporate law (unfair prejudice), property and trust law (proprietary estoppel and constructive trust), and privacy law. Of secondary interests, he also conducts research in 'third-world approaches to comparative private law' between civil and common law jurisdictions. In the meantime, he keeps sustained interests in the regulatory and distributive roles of law in ‘risk society’ for socio-legal research in this area in the medium term.
Yong welcomes PhD applications in or related to these areas of legal research.
