Dr Wendy Thompson is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Primary Dental Care. Her academic research is about urgent dental care, including improving the quality of decision making in order to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics in dentistry. Wendy works as a general dentist at Cottage Dental Practice in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria. During the COVID-19 pandemic, dentistry in the UK has been restricted to designated urgent dental centres (UDC); Wendy was redeployed as the NHS England locality lead for South Cumbria's UDCs and in support of national guidance on dental prescribing. Wendy is the lead author of the FDI World Dental Federation's white paper on antibiotics in dentistry and is an expert adviser to NICE. Health Education England regularly invites her to provide continuing professional development courses for members of the dental team about prescribing and antibiotic resistance.
