Dr Tracey Shield
Research Associate
Biography
Following the completion of my PhD.in Medicinal Chemistry in 1998 and a brief period working in health services research within the NHS, I first came to the University of Manchester in 1999 to complete an MA (Econ) in Applied Social Research. After completing this, I secured an NHS research training fellowship, to develop quality indicators for primary care mental health services.
After the completion of my training fellowship, I returned to the NHS as a public health researcher, followed by a move into local government, where I developed and managed a coordinated approach to youth engagement.
In 2013, I took up a position with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), to support the development of national public health and social care guidelines, aimed primarily at the NHS and local authorities (see NICE guideline publications under 'Research and Projects').
Before returning to academia, I trained as a children’s counsellor and worked as a mental health practitioner in schools.
In 2019, I returned to the University of Manchester, to work on an evidence synthesis project to identify factors which lead to, or prevent, poor mental health (e.g. anxiety, depression, stress) in carers who look after a family member or friend who is at end of life.
I am currently working with Dr Pauline Whelan and Professor Penny Bee as part of Greater Manchester ARC mental health theme on the development, evaluation, and implementation of projects involving young people in mental health research through Public and Community Involvement and Engagement (PCIE).
