Professor Particle Accelerator Physics
Biography
I am Head of the Particle Accelerator Physics Group. Several group members have subsidiary membership with the Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics Groups. I have an active program on beam electrodynamics. At present I am task leader for Accelerator and Beam Studies for the European Framework 7. This task entails three main areas: HOMBPM studies, LLRF (Low Level RF) and SCRF gun (ELBE). The international collaborative effort spans DESY, BESY, CERN, University of Manchester and the Cockcroft Institute.
I am also Head of Education, Training and Outreach at the Cockroft Institute of Science and Technology. The Cockcroft provides a base for postgraduate studies and is equipped with a series of internationally acclaimed particle accelerators. A full series of graduate level lectures -ranging from introductory to advanced- is provided by the relevant experts on a weekly basis.
My research interest lies in collective effects, beam dynamics, wake-fields and higher order mode analysis for the XFEL/ILC main linacs and collimators, beam impedance and beam dynamics issues for CLIC, LHC. and HIE-Isolde. Prior to taking up the faculty appointment at the University of Manchester I was at Stanford University pursuing research on high energy linacs and this was preceded by a research appointment at the Cavendish labs, University of Cambridge.
