Nick Matthews is a PhD student at the University of Manchester interested in the application of sustainability assessments to emerging technologies. He is particularly interested in the field of synthetic biology, building on his background in the biological sciences. His research mobilises well-established analytical sustainability assessment methodologies in combination with deliberative governance frameworks like responsible research and innovation to develop a new framework for Constructive Sustainability Assessment. In developing this framework, Nick is engaged in a number of interdisciplinary and international collaborations spanning industry and academic settings.
Nick is supervised by Prof. Phil Shapira and Dr Laurence Stamford and is affiliated with the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research, the Responsible Research and Innovation group at the Manchester Synthetic Biology Centre (SynBioChem), and the Sustainable Industrial Systems group in the school of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science (CEAS).
