Nick Matthews is a PhD researcher at the University of Manchester supervised by Professor Phil Shapira and Dr Laurence Stamford. He is predominantly based at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIOIR) but is also affiliated to the Sustainable Industrial Systems group within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science (CEAS) and the Responsible Research and Innovation group at the Manchester Synthetic Biology Centre (SynBioChem).

Nick’s research interests centre on the sustainability of emerging technologies, with particular focus on the field of synthetic biology, building on his background in the biological sciences. He is interested in questions of policy and governance relating to how emerging technologies can be mobilised to promote sustainable development. This research has led to the development and application of a framework for Constructive Sustainability Assessment which aligns analytical sustainability assessment methodologies with governance frameworks like responsible research and innovation. In developing this framework, Nick is engaged in a number of interdisciplinary and international collaborations spanning industry and academic settings.
