Mostafa is an innovative research leader in Aerospace Engineering with a sustained track record in researching aerodynamics, design of aerial vehicles, and biomechanics. He has contributed to numerous theoretical developments and engineering demonstration projects. In particular, Mostafa has extensive expertise in developing experimentally validated analytical models for fluid mechanics and micro-actuation/sensing dynamics, and integration of these models into novel closed form design processes allowing the development of efficient microsystems. His interests involve design procedures, theoretical modelling, validation through experiments, and development of understanding of how to optimise materials selection, geometric configurations, actuation strategies, and systems integration for novel concepts.

Mostafa’s Research Specialisms include:

- Aerodynamics of subsonic wings including fixed, rotary and flapping

- Design, build, and test of insect-scale flapping wing air vehicles

- Engineering demonstration of Microsystems including micro-robots, micro-pumps, and micro-sensors

- Biomechanics of insect/spider locomotion including flying and jumping

- Modelling and testing of piezoelectric actuators and harvesters

- Design and development of Unmanned Air Vehicles
