I currently undertake 7 Direct Patient Care (DPC) clinical sessions at Manchester Royal Infirmary and 5 academic sessions at the Manchester Medical School.

Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health: I am the Vice Dean for Social Responsibility and Public Engagement. My key research themes are Global Health and Post conflict disability. I also have a keen interest in the use of creative arts in communicating complex health messages in deprived communities.

Manchester Medical School: Until August 2016, I was the Director of Clinical Placements and Academic Lead for Years 3,4&5. In this role I led the team responsible for overhauling the entire clinical curriculum and for introducing Mandatory Minimum Standards for all UG Clinical Placements in Manchester and Lancashire.  

National Roles: I am a member of of Strategy Advisory Board of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), UKRI, Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, UK

Manchester Royal Infirmary: I am a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine. The ICU is one of the larger Units in the UK with approximately 40 (Level 2 and Level 3 beds).

International: Visiting Professor in Intensive Care Medicine, University of Cairo Egypt; Visiting Professor in Post-Conflict studies, University of Gulu, Uganda


I graduated from the University of Colombo, Sri lanka in 1990 (MB BS). I obtained the MD(Anesthesiology) from the University of Colombo in 1994 and FRCA(London) in 1996. I worked for the Medical Research Council (UK) Trauma Group between 1999-2001 and during this period I undertook research on the pulmonary consequences of shock. This led to my PhD thesis "Quantifying pulmonary injury in shock" in 2001. I completed my specialist training in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care at the North West Deanery and was appointed Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2002. I joined the Manchester Medical School in 2010 and In 2015 was appointed as Professor in Medical Education and Training.
