Biography

After several years teaching and lecturing I began a full-time PhD in the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester. I started as a lecturer in the School of Medicine in 2000.  

Current research focus: 

  • psychological aspects of long-term physical illness, particuarly inflammatory joint and skin conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (adults),  juvenile arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis.
  • psychological and physical comorbidities of inflammatory diseases
  • self-management including adherence to medication and lifestyle behaviour changes
  • cognitive representations of illness, pain
  • patient reported outcome measures

Social responsibility

Design and delivery of training on supporting families bereaved by suicide. Collaborators on this project include colleagues at the Centre for Suicide Prevention and the charity, If U Care Share Foundation.

Board member of YOUNG IDENTITY - a poetry and creative writing collective for young people in Manchester aged 13-25
