Laura joined the University of Manchester in January 2015. Laura has an interest in health care organization and financing, particularly on how institutional arrangements affect health and health care outcomes across different systems. She enjoys applied analysis using administrative and survey data.
Laura currently holds a Skills Development Fellowship from the UKRI Medical Research Council (MRC) with a focus on the role of resource allocation formulae and local health authorities and providers in achieving equity in service delivery. She is also currently working on health system mechanisms and effects of Performance Based Financing in Zimbabwe and Mozambique and on waiting times and health care outcomes in Emergency Departments in England.
Laura worked on the refreshment of the resource allocation formula for mental health with NHS England Insights for Finance and on variations in mortality across the week following emergency admission to hospital in England. She also worked on a few CLAHRC GM (Greater Manchester Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care) projects, including the evaluation of extended access o primary care in Greater Manchester and on the effects of training on Acute Kidney Injury management in primary care.
Prior to joining the University of Manchester, Laura was based at the Global Health and Development Department at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where she completed her PhD research on equity and efficiency in the allocation of financial resources across geographic areas in Mozambique. She also contributed to teaching and she worked on a pay-for-performance scheme in Tanzania.
Laura has a background in Economics with a focus on development economics. Her interest in public health care systems grew while working as an economist in the Directorate of Planning and International Cooperation of the Ministry of Health of Mozambique for over five years, as an Overseas Development Institute Fellow and then funded by the World Health Organization and the UK Department for International Development.
