Biography

Joshua Barnfather is a researcher contributing to the fields of robotics, metrology, manufacturing and data science. Joshua’s core research interests are in the area of robotics technology development for application to extreme industrial environments, particularly those associated with nuclear operations, maintenance and decommissioning.

Joshua has a background in applied engineering R&D working with various companies in the nuclear industry. A notable project lead by Joshua involved robotics technology development for Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster decommissioning, which he conducted in Japan working for Hitachi and Hitachi GE Nuclear Energy. This project focused on image-based robot tracking in low light, obstacle cluttered, space restricted, radiation environments to aid disaster surveying activities. He also has experience working outside of the nuclear industry on a self-employed basis as a Data Science consultant helping companies reduce costs by developing AI-based predictive maintenance capabilities and understanding large volumes of data for product optimisation.

Joshua holds a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, which was focused on the development of techniques for metrology assisted robotic machining of nuclear pressure vessel features. This was a collaboration between The University of Manchester, Rolls-Royce Civil Nuclear, The Nuclear AMRC and co-supervised by The National Physical Laboratory. Joshua is also a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Manager and holds BSc and MSc degrees in mechanical engineering related disciplines.
