Biography

Hujun Yin received the BEng degree in Electronic Engineering and the MSc degree in Signal Processing, both from Southeast University, and the PhD degree in Neural Networks from University of York. He joined the University of Manchester (UMIST before the merge) in 1996 as a Post-doc Research Associate, was appointed a Lecturer in 1998 and subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor. He has also been the Head of Business Engagement in AI and Data for the Faculty of Science and Engineering since 2019.

He is a Turing Fellow of the ATI (the Alan Turing Institue), a senior member of the IEEE, and a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College. He has been the Vice Chair of the IEEE CIS UK Ireland Chapter since 2019. He leads a team of 12 researchers working in vision systems and machine learning with strong emphasis on real-world and industrial applications.

He gave a plenary talk to AIACT2022, SOCO 2017, HAIS 2013, IEEE IST 2012CBIC 2011 and HAIS 2008 and was a tutorial speaker at WCCI 2008 (Title: Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction and Data Visualisation). He was chair of Special Session on Principal Manifolds and Data Visualisation at IJCNN 2007, and organiser of Biologically Inspired Information Fusion Workshop, Surrey, 22-23 August 2006. He gave a talk on "The Self-Organising Maps for Data Visualisation and Manifold Mapping" to Workshop on Principal Manifolds, Leicester, 24-26 August 2006. 

He has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics since 2015 and served as  Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks between 2006-2009. He had been a member of Editorial Board of International Journal of Neural Systems from 2005 till 2020.
