My name is Gianncarlo Durán, a Chilean of 34 years old from Santiago. I studied Industrial Design at the Universidad de Chile, and I hold an MSc Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship from the University of Manchester. My MSc experience focused mainly on understanding the social innovation phenomenon. The dissertation aimed to explore how cross-sector collaboration – the collaboration between the private sector and social entrepreneurs– can nurture social innovation.

In the academic sector, I have taught Design modules, worked as a manager of Curriculum Innovation and co-created the NESIS Social Innovation Programme. The latter trained higher education students from three regions of Chile in using creativity to design solutions to societal problems.

I have also worked and volunteer for organisations in the social innovation arena, from the third sector, as Ashoka Innovators for the Public (India and Chile); and Arauco.

In the public sector, I was part of the team that implemented the Laboratorio de Gobierno, the first public sector innovation lab on a national level in Latin-American. I acted as Deputy Director and Head of Innovation Capabilities from 2015 to 2018. Among my duties, I worked closely with world-leading innovation organisations such as the OECD (carrying out the first public innovation capabilities review of an OECD country), Nesta (with whom we published a report in English and Spanish about the Innovation Training Programmed designed by the Capabilities Team), and several other private and academic organisations in Chile.

Currently, the focus of my PhD research project is to explore and understand radicality and change in public innovation and the catalyst that led change to occur.

I also work as a consultant for FutureGov in the UK, an organisation that aims at reforming public services by supporting organisations through digital transformation and service design.
