Overview

Roles within the School and Faculty

I am the School's Senior Academic Advisor (2018-)

Interested in developing research projects in any of my areas? Come and see me in Manchester and / or let's meet for a coffee and a chat.

Biography

I graduated from UMIST in 2001 gaining a 1st class degree in Pure and Applied Physics and being awarded course prize for best performance in all three years.

I then moved on to do a PhD in Atmospheric Physics. This included field work in Australia (Darwin), Swizerland (Jungfraujoch), and laboratory work in Germany (at the AIDA chamber). I also received a scholarship to visit the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado.

During my PhD I also used the large-eddy-simulation numerical technique and developed numerical cloud parcel models to interpret atmospheric and laboratory data.

Now I am a Reader in the School of Earth and Environmental Science. I have continued to develop the numerical and laboratory expertise in the University of Manchester in the areas of cloud physics and cloud dynamics. In this role I have developed a large cloud chamber facility at Manchester, in the Latham Laboratories.

Current interests include: ice-nucleation; ; cloud-physics and atmospheric aerosols; atmospheric modelling / forecasting; use and development of low-cost sensor technology; fluid dynamics (applied to understanding the weather on other planets - e.g. Saturn).
