Baris is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher and a PhD student in the Machine Learning and Optimisation Research Group at the University of Manchester. He is currently working on designing and implementing a developmental robotics architecture for grounding demonstratives (e.g. this and that) and pointing gestures for the iCub humanoid robotics platform under the supervision of Prof. Angelo Cangelosi. His project is a part of Deictic Communication (DComm) Project which is funded by EU’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme.

Baris had been working on the same project for two years at the Centre for Robotics and Neural Systems (CRNS) at the University of Plymouth until the research group transferred to the University of Manchester in October 2018. He received his MSc degree in Cognitive Science from Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara. His master thesis was focused on the role of dopaminergic modulation on attentional shifting between different sensory modalities in fruit flies. This research was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and he also worked as a project assistant at TOBB University of Economics and Technology, Ankara. During his master studies, he gained expertise in different fields such as Neural Modelling, Cognitive Linguistics, Affective Neuroscience and Time Cognition. Baris has a BSc degree in Computer Engineering from Galatasaray University, Istanbul, where he gravitated towards Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

His current research involves bringing together different approaches from various research fields such as robotics, developmental psychology, linguistics and AI, and it benefits from Baris’ multi-disciplinary background.
