Overview

I am a philosopher with interests in the conceptual, metaphysical, and ethical problems in medicine and psychiatry. I also have broader interests in philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. Before my career in philosophy, I qualified in medicine and specialised as a psychiatrist in the National Health Service.

Biography

I attained my PhD in Philosophy from Lancaster University in 2017. In 2014, I completed an MPhil with distinction in Philosophy and Ethics of Mental Health at the University of Pretoria. Before this, I graduated from the University of Cambridge with an MB BChir in Medicine in 2008, and a BA (Hons) in History and Philosophy of Science in 2005. I hold an MRCPsych from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

I joined the University of Manchester in 2018 as a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow in Philosophy. My current project draws on insights from philosophy of mind, philosophy of medicine, and philosophy of science to understand the complex relation between mental disorder and suicide. Before joining the University of Manchester, I was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Philosophy at Lancaster University.

Outside philosophy, I enjoy natural history, cooking for friends and family, and obsessing about music, especially jazz. I hold an AMusTCL in music theory and a DipABRSM in piano performance. I currently live in Lancaster with my wife Shuna, our son Theo, and our snake Sweetcorn.
