I am retired from the full payroll but I continue to contribute as a research active member of staff in my capacity as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Dept of Materials (Staff PN 84279, LN 7084279B).
I have spent my working life associated with, and working in the field of Colour Science. Industrial employers have included Samuel Heap & Son Ltd, Dyers and Finishers, and Courtaulds Ltd, at their Droylesden Research and Development labs.
Recent career highlights include an on-going research and publication record, and a five out of five success rate in Research Council funding bids. The average research rating on the outcome of those projects was alpha 3. Since joining UMIST in 1989, I have produced over 37 refereed publications, and generated in excess of £1,000,000 research income.
The development of the Imagemaster computer colour-visualisation system, and its launch with national publicity was a gratifying outcome of one of the above projects. Its subsequent purchase by an International corporation confirmed its significance.
In recent years, I have become a member of the Colour Measurement Committee of the Society of Dyers and Colorists, which is the senior national committee in the field. I have also served on the SDC Fastness Testing Committee.
My research and publications in the field of colour calibration methodology, have lead to my appointment to an international committee. This is TC 1-56, a technical committee of the main international standardisation body of colour science, the CIE (Commission Internationale d'Eclairage). Division 1 is concerned with the fundamentals of Colorimetry, and TC 1-56 reviews the properties and uses of the Colorimetric Standard Observer.
A particularly satisfying aspect of my research in colour communication systems, has been its wide and general applicability. It must be a first, for a member of the Textile Department to receive a substantial DTI Link funding grant (won in collaboration with Unilever food research) from the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food.
Current work is on Imaging Science, and Colorimetric modelling. The work is also expected to yield inter-disciplinary exploitation and generate new research projects and grants.
