Dr Lee A. Fielding

Dr. Lee A. Fielding obtained a MChem in Chemistry with first class honours from The University of Sheffield in 2008, which was followed by a PhD in 2012 on the synthesis, characterization and applications of colloidal nanocomposite particles from the same institution with Professor Steven P. Armes.

Dr. Fielding then worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher on the preparation of bespoke colloidal particles via RAFT dispersion polymerization, in part for occlusion within inorganic host crystals. He has conducted research in several other areas of polymer and colloid science including the preparation of polymer brushes, as well as synthetic micrometeorite analogues. He took up a Lectureship in the Department of Materials at The University of Manchester in September 2015.

He is a committee member of the Joint Colloids Group, Recent Appointees in Polymer Science and Early Career Colloid Network.

Smart nanoparticles as doubly responsive sensors for foreign DNA

Synopsis: This project aims to develop a nanoparticle-based diagnostic which will both gel and display a colour change in the presence of amplified DNA. It is well known that cationic nanoparticles can gel in the presence of anionic natural polymers and a colour change can be triggered when DNA binds to dyes prepared in the Jones’ lab. We aim to use both these strategies, in conjunction with isothermal DNA amplification to develop an assay for foreign DNA detection.
