Charlotte is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology, during which she combines research with the final years of Rheumatology Speciality training. She practices clinically at the Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Her PhD in Business and Management was in the field of knowledge mobilisation, focussing on the development of toolkits and similar products, which aim to get research into practice.

Charlotte’s research uses qualitative methodology, and its focus is twofold. First, on keeping patients at the centre of care, with specific emphasis on patient education and shared decision-making. Second, on exploring how to implement and optimise the mobilisation of knowledge from healthcare research into practice. She regards relationships with patients as partners as key to both these endeavours.

Charlotte undertook a national clinical leadership fellowship in 2011-2012 (National Leadership Academy), sparking her interest in quality improvement. She is a co-founder of the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) Quality Improvement (QI) Special Interest Group. In this role, she has designed, convened and chaired the national QI Practical Methodology Workshop on behalf of BSR. Charlotte also sits on the BSR National Early Inflammatory Arthritis Audit Project Working Group. She led the development of the British Society for Rheumatology Choosing Wisely UK recommendations in collaboration with patients and a multi-disciplinary working group.
