Biography

I am Professor of Health Informatics at the Health eResearch Centre for North England (www.herc.ac.uk), University of Manchester. My background is in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.

My research focuses on data-driven informatics methods for healthcare quality improvement, data mining for healthcare, predictive models, and clinical computerised decision support. Since January 2016, I am directing the Greater Manchester Connected Health City, which is part of the £20M "Health North" investment to establish a learning health system in the North of England. I also lead the EPSRC-funded "Wearable Clinic" (£2m), a collaboration between the Universities of Manchester and York that deploys emerging digital technologies to help patients with long term conditions to better manage their health in daily life, respond more quickly to changes in symptoms and prevent fall back episodes.

I am involved in two major pieces of NIHR infrastructure in Manchester, the Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre (where I lead the Safety Informatics theme) and the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (where I lead the Inofrmatics and Data Science cross-cutting theme).

In April 2017, I organised the Informatics for Health 2017 conference in Manchester which was attended by more than 800 people from 30 countries. In addition, I co-chaired the Scientific Programme Committee of MEDINFO-2017, the 16th World Congress on Health and Biomedical Informatics, which was held in Hangzhou, China, in August 2017.

Since 2018 I am Research Domain Director for Digital Health at the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health in Manchester, and a fellow of the American College of Medical Informaticians (ACMI).
