Research interests
Brazilian literature and culture. Indigenous cultures of Brazil. Contemporary indigenous cultural production from Brazil. Racism against indigenous populations. The city in Brazil and Spanish America from 19th-century to the present. Current projects: Racism and anti-racism in Brazil: the case of indigenous peoples' (with Felipe Milanez Pereira, UFBA); and 'Cultures of anti-racism in Latin America (with Peter Wade and Ignacio Aguiló). Author of Life in the Megalopolis: Mexico City and São Paulo (Routledge 2007); Rain Forest Literatures: Amazonian Texts and Latin American Culture (University of Minnesota Press, 2004).
