Research interests

  • Neuroimaging studies (PET and MRI) of
    • dementia (early diagnosis of dementia in patients with mild cognitive deficits, multicentre studies, impairment of specific transmitter systems and their relevance for cognitive symptoms and distinction of dementing disorders, monitoring of progression, clinical trials in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies)
    • brain tumors (grading of metabolic activity, detection of progression to higher grade of malignancy, interference with and plasticity of normal brain function, monitoring of therapy, 3D visualization for planning of neurosurgical intervention)
  • Coordination of National and International Multicentre PET Studies
    • Early Diagnosis of Neurodegenerative Diseases within the EU-funded Networks on Diagnostic Molecular Imaging (www.dimi.eu), Imaging of Neuroinflammation in Neurodegenerative Diseases (INMiND), the Medical Informatics Framework on Alzheimer's Disease (EMIF-AD) and the MRC-funded DPUK partnership on MR-PET imaging
    • Chief investigator of the EU-funded "Network for Efficiency and Standardisation of Dementia Diagnosis" (NEST-DD) with a comprehensive clinical and neuroimaging digital database of more than 1000 subjects
    • Collaboration with the NIH-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI)

Methodological knowledge

  • Functional neuroimaging, especially using positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Accredited expert in radiation protection (ARSAC)
