Overview
Jo Mylan is Lecturer in Sustainability and Innovation at Alliance Manchester Business School. She is affilated to both the Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI) and Institute for Innovation Research (MIoIR).
My research engages with questions of how societies can transition to less resource intensive ways of meeting our needs, with interests in:
- Sustainable consumption and production
- Low carbon transitions
- Firm and industry responses to environmental problems
- The relationship between innovation and consumption
- The co-evolution of technology and cultural conventions
Conceptually, I use ideas from:
- Economic sociology
- Science and technology studies
- Organisational and institutional field theories
- Social practice theory
Empirically, I study:
- Everyday, mundane activities and products
Biography
I previously held a position as Research Fellow at the Sustainable Consumption Institute.
I completed an ESRC funded (1+3) PhD at the Centre for Research on Innovation and Competition (CRIC), under the supervision of Dr Sally Randles and Professor Alan Warde. My thesis, entitled ‘Environmental Consultancy in Contaminated Land Remediation: Profession, Markets and Ecological Modernisation’, was a study of the emergence and mobilisation of environmental knowledge in land regeneration.
I hold a First Class BSc(hons) in Environmental Science (2002), MEnt Environmental Innovation (2003) and MSc Sociological Research (2005) all awarded by The University of Manchester.
