I graduated in Psychology from the University of Manchester in 2001. I also undertook my ESRC funded PhD (awarded in 2008 for a mixed methods study, 'Significant others and chronic fatigue syndrome') and undertook my first two post doctoral research positions at Manchester. In 2009 I moved to the University of Huddersfield where I worked as a Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow. In 2017 I returned to Manchester to take up my current position as Lecturer in the Manchester Centre for Health Psychology.

I have a particular interest in qualitative research and have co-authored three books in this area. My research primarily focuses on using qualitative approaches and my research interests include management of chronic and palliative illness conditions, and networks of communication in health and social care. My work is underpinned by a concern with developing inclusive approaches to applied research and I have been involved (with Prof Nigel King, University of Huddersfield) in developing the template analysis approach to thematic analysis and the visual elicitation tool 'Pictor'.

I am unit lead for qualitative methods for MRes Psychology and lead for the year 2 BSc Psychology qualitative lab classes. I am also unit lead for Illness and Healthcare for MSc Health/ Clinical and Health Psychology. I supervise a number of research dissertations at undergraduate, Masters and PhD level and I am Teaching Contribution Lead for the Division of Psychology and Mental Health.  I also provide external (NHS Trust/ universities) training in qualitative data collection approaches and qualitative data analysis.

I am Chair of the British Psychological Society's (BPS) Qualitative Methods in Psychology (QMiP) section, lead of QMiP's REF working group and represent QMiP on the BPS Research Board. I am a member of the BPS standing conference and the BPS Early Career network steering group. I am a Chartered Psychologist, an Associate Fellow of the BPS and a full member of the BPS Division of Health Psychology.
