Biography

I have over 20 years of research & administrative experience on multiple mental health projects within the Centre for Suicide Mental Health and Safety at the University of Manchester.

I currently work on the Manchester Self-Harm Project (MaSH), which is a long-running epidemiological project, studying clinical and socio-demographic trends in people attending one of the Manchester Emergency Departments following self-harm. The Principle Investigator is Professor Nav Kapur. Funded directly by the Department of Health, MaSH is also part of the Multicentre Study of Self-harm in England (MCM), working alongside colleagues from similar self-harm monitoring studies based at the University of Oxford and Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

As Data Manager at MaSH, I have responsibility for overseeing and ensuring the quality of MaSH data used in all MaSH and MCM peer reviewed papers and reports.

Prior to working at MaSH, I worked at The National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide & Homicide by People with Mental Illness (NCISH), also based at The University of Manchester. The Principal Investigators are Professor Louis Appleby, Professor Nav Kapur and Professor Jenny Shaw. NCISH is an internationally renowned national epidemiological study, running for over 20 years. I worked on all 3 core projects: i) suicide, ii) homicide, iii) sudden unexplained deaths. I was also study co-ordinator on two national case-control studies and a unique national service monitoring study.

Both MaSH and NCISH inform and make recommendations on national suicide prevention initiatives and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidelines for short- and long-term treatment of patients who present to emergency departments with self-harm.

I have presented MaSH and NCISH findings at conferences and talks, and lead on representing the projects to a wide range of people on information stands at conferences. I also work as a journal reviewer for various peer-reviewed journals.

I am always happy to chat to people about MaSH or to meet up to discuss potential collaborations.
