Prof Gary Younge
Professor of Sociology

Overview
Gary Younge joined Manchester University in 2020 from The Guardian, where he was a columnist and editor-at-large. His most recent work has focussed on youth violence, relating to shootings in the United States, where he was The Guardian correspondent for 12 years, and knife criime in Britain. Throughout his career both his jouranlism and books have covered social movements in general (and the civil rights movement in particular), inequality, race, immigration, identity and politiics . He is currently concentrating his research on the Black presence in post-war Europe. Between 2009 and 2011 he was the Belle Zeller Visiting Professor for Public Policy and Social Administration at Brooklyn College (CUNY). Currently a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, he is also an Alfred Knobler Fellow of Type Media in the US and an editorial board member of the Nation magazine. As a broadcaster he has made several radio and television documentaries on subjects ranging from gay marriage to Brexit.
