Biography

In the blink of an eye, I've now been at Manchester for over a decade, arriving in 2008 to join the Research Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures as a Research Fellow in Film, Media and Transnational Cultures, by way of a PhD at Nottingham (2003-07) and a Research Associate at the Centre for Media Research, at the University of Ulster (2005-08) in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. The rapid transformation of the city and the University notwithstanding, I am very happy to call Manchester 'home', not least because of its vibrancy, energy, and outward-looking spirit.

Hailing from Singapore, a tiny city-state nestled in Southeast Asia (please don't call it by its colonial moniker,  'the Far East'), whose horizons always exceeded its geographical confines, the 'superdiversity' of Manchester life and culture ensures a warm welcome and a quirky niche for everyone.

I am now a Senior Lecturer in Screen Studies, within the interdisciplinary department of Drama, and teach on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I am also the Programme Director for the MA Film Studies programme and the PGR director for Drama, which means that I oversee postgraduate matters in the Drama department.

I find watching, reading and writing about international film energising for the alternate ways of looking and thinking about the world it proffers. Goodness knows, the need to imagine some of those alternatives have never been more pressing than in the present time.
