Dr Grieve is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). He has spent 20 years of his career in the field of on-line analysis, measurement and informatics R&D within pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Prior to taking on directorship of the SSUIC in 2007, he was based in Syngenta's New Business Development unit working in collaboration with the company's commercial managers to determine how sensors and diagnostics systems may be deployed within new agribusinesses. Previously Dr Grieve has been the industrial manager on a number of Research Council and DTI supported initiatives, including leading the ProceMon LINK project to introduce Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) into large volume process filtration vessels. Since joining the UoM, he has been awarded grants as PI from the TSB and the EPSRC’s Knowledge Transfer Challenge. Dr Grieve currently supervises a team of 7 PhDs and 3 Post-Doctoral Research Associates (PDRA). He is the ex-Chair of the Sensors & Instrumentation KTN and currently Chair of the IET's Measurement, Sensors and Instrumentation Exec. Dr Grieve has been awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Fellowship to progress his sensors research and has been identified by the Science Media Centre as the spokesperson for e-Agri.
