Biography

Adi Bharat is a PhD researcher and teaching assistant in French Studies at the University of Manchester. His thesis, funded by the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures and supervised by Joseph McGonagle and Barbara Lebrun, is titled Representations of Jewish-Muslim Relations in Contemporary France

His thesis seeks to determine, firstly, to what extent a narrative of polarization (Mandel 2014) remains a dominant force in media and political representations of Jewish-Muslim relations and, secondly, explore how and to what extent French Jewish and Muslim writers and activists relate and respond to such a narrative consisting of dominant, reified binary definitions within the contemporary framework of difference-blind assimilationist republican universalism.

Adi's main research interests include antisemitism and anti-Muslim racism, Jewish-Muslim relations in France, LGBT-affirming interpretations of Islam and the lived experiences of LGBTQ Muslims, apostasy from Islam and the situation and experiences of ex-Muslims, as well as, more broadly speaking, twentieth and twenty-first century French literature, society, and politics. In addition, he has published on a diverse set of topics, from seventeenth-century French theatre to E.M. Forster. He is also a translator, having translated an essay by Voltaire and a book on Homosexuality and Transidentity in Islam (forthcoming with Amsterdam University Press).

Before joining the University of Manchester, Adi taught French at the City College of New York and Brooklyn College. He received his M.A. (equivalent) from the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris, France, where he wrote a thesis on the representations of Jews and Muslims in recent French writing under the supervision of Catherine Brun. Prior to that, he received his B.A. from Boston University, where he had the privilege of studying under Jeffrey MehlmanOdile Cazenave, and the late Susan Jackson.
