The Silent Time Machine: A Resource for the Study of Early Ethnographic Film

Research output: Non-textual formWeb publication/site

Abstract

This website arises from The Silent Time Machine: recovering early ethnographic film, a research project carried out between January 2014 and February 2018. This project was supported by the Leverhulme Trust through a Major Research Fellowship award (MRF-2012-121) and by the University of Manchester. The website includes a general discussion of the genres of early ethnographic film, listings and analyses of over 200 early films on a regional basis and brief biographies of around 70 leading film-makers, plus key information about early film technology, a catalogue of archives where early films are held and an extensive bibliography. An important feature of the website is the provision of links that allow one to view the films listed in their entirety.
