Abstract

Not all research findings turn out to be true. To guard against potential criticism, researchers qualify their claims in various ways, including changing the form of the verb and inserting mitigating phrases—a practice known as hedging. This OUP blog post shows how hedging can easily escalate and how it can be checked.
