No More Bystanders- Grandchildren of Hiroshima and the 70th Anniversary of the Atomic Bomb

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

2015 marked the 70th anniversary of the American atomic bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Amidst the commemorations in Hiroshima in August that year, London Bubble Theatre staged a performance created by Japanese young people from their interviews with elders who experienced the day and its aftermath. The ‘Grandchildren of Hiroshima’ performance is placed in conversation with other artistic responses to the bomb, and the complicity of all nuclear war ‘bystanders.’ The legacy of nuclear terror, in fact, means there are no more bystanders, and all are participants in the history of the bombs’ performative power.
