Abstract

The invention relates to an aq. compn. comprising a plurality of nanoparticles dispersed in an aq. medium, wherein: (I) the nanoparticles comprise a core formed from one or more non-cross-linked org. π-conjugated polymers; (II) the nanoparticles have a particle size of <400 nm; and (III) the concn. of the nanoparticles in the aq. medium is ≥ 12 mm; and wherein the non-cross-linked org. p-conjugated polymers are intrinsic semiconductors that do not comprise any carbon-carbon triple bonds. The invention also relates to a method of forming an aq. compn., comprising: (I) forming the nanoparticles by emulsion polymn. or miniemulsion polymn. techniques to form an aq. suspension of nanoparticles; and (II) optionally purifying the nanoparticle suspension. The invention also claims nanoparticles comprising one or more non-cross-linked org. π-conjugated polymers, wherein: (I) the nanoparticles are formed from one or more non-cross-linked org. π-conjugated having a soly. in an org. solvent [e.g. chlorobenzene at room temp.] of <10 mg/mL; and (II) the nanoparticles have a particle size of <400 nm. The invention also discloses a process for prepg. an org. semi-conductor or photovoltaic device or component, comprising: (I) depositing an aq. compn. comprising nanoparticles as onto a substrate; and (II) heating the substrate to a temp. above the glass transition temp. (Tg) of the nanoparticles to form a film of org. π-conjugated polymer on the substrate. The invention also relates to an org. semi-conductive film obtainable by the process. The invention also claims the use of an aq. compn. or nanoparticles for the prepn. of an org. semi-conductor or photovoltaic device or component.
