Geological sequestration of carbon dioxide

Abstract

One of the global challenges in tackling climate change is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology has been considered as an option to reduce CO2 emission into atmosphere by capturing CO2 from the flue gases and storing that in deep geological formations. Geological sequestration options for carbon dioxide which promote enhanced hydrocarbon recovery provide financial offsets in terms of CO2 sequestration cost. These include enhanced recovery of hydrocarbons from depleting oil and gas reservoirs as well as unmineable coal seams. This chapter presents an overview of the existing CCS technologies with the aim to provide essential learning materials for undergraduate and postgraduate students of interdisciplinary subjects, and in specific within the context of energy and environmental geotechnics.
