From Uniformity to Diversity: The transforming context of contemporary Chinese art since the 1980s

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter examines the changes experienced by the Chinese contemporary art scene, first by considering the early period of the Deng Xiaoping reforms (circa the 1980s) and the "opening" of China to the rest of the world, before examining the changes witnessed since the beginning of the new millennium. Interspersed with these analyses are discussions of parallel movements in Greater Manchester and the important role the city played in bringing Chinese contemporary art to the northwest of England.
