N2 - The authors demonstrate that the specific production rate of ethanol is always higher in a grande than in cytoplasmic petite mutant derived from it as long as the supply of O//2 to the grande culture is maintained at a level which will satisfy the demands of sterol biosynthesis without the induction of respiration. It is also shown that the petite mutant is more sensitive to the growth inhibitory effects of ethanol than its grande parent.
