Abstract

This volume is the result of an effort to rekindle the academic dialogue between historians of early modern Spanish America based in the UK and those based in the Spanish speaking world. From a range of different perspectives, the contributions collected here set out to revisit the multifaceted study of the diverse groups which conformed the Spanish American elites and the identities traditionally attributed to them. All chapters share an interest in retracing the broader dimensions of the actions and social interactions of Spaniards born in the Americas, Spanish immigrants, and native elites. At the same time, all chapters also stress the need to study early modern Spanish America as an integral part of the Spanish monarchy, rather than as a set of isolated territories.
