Being an egg or sperm donor: The impact of donation on donors and their families

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

This leaflet explores the impact of egg and sperm donation on donors’ own lives and family relationships. We use examples from our interviews with donors, their families and counsellors to show how donors and their families experienced egg and sperm donation.

We studied which family members donors told about their donation, who was thought to 'have a say' in donation. We explore how donation features in the subsequent family life of donors and how their family members think about the relationships created by donation.

Our research shows that while current policy focuses on the relationship between the donor-conceived child, their parent(s) and the donor, there are more people, including family members of donors, who feel involved in the donation.
