Case Award (Non Research) [CASE NR]
First we prepared a long report on the Scottish pay gap. This was presented and discussed with stakeholders in Glasgow in 2017. Next we won a CASE (employer supported) ESRC PhD studentship. Joanna Wilson took up this role in 2017 after her 1-year Masters preparation 2016/7. The PhD runs 2017 to 2020.
The Scottish pay gap is a persistent problem whose causes do not map onto the rest of the UK's causes perfectly. Furthermore there are signs of retail and tourism sectors, highlighted by the Scottish Government as potential growth areas, having low wages among women relative to men. A method of analysis that compares like-for-like is used to examine the causes of pay gaps both across and within sectors.
