Making Poverty Personal: Cultural Impacts of Social Cash Transfers in Tanzania

Internal description

Research Project Grant [RPG]

Description

This project uses anthropological research to investigate whether new programmes to reduce poverty in Africa change conceptualisations of poverty in ways that increase the marginalisation of the poorest. It investigates whether a conditional social cash transfer programme in Tanzania stigmatizes the poor and makes
families and communities less likely to help them. Conditional social cash transfer programmes aim to make poor households more productive by changing their behaviour so that they can lift themselves out of poverty. The project investigates how development programmes influence attitudes towards the poor and with what effects.
