Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony opening was nearly abandoned, says music scholar
This sliding-doors moment was uncovered by professor of music Barry Cooper, the UK’s leading Beethoven scholar, while researching a book. As he examined a sketch that was previously considered to be part of the composer’s work on Symphony No.5, Prof Cooper became convinced the “da-da-da-dumm” theme was in fact conceived as part of a separate piano fantasia in April 1804.
