Dr Gail Millin-Chalabi - Earth Observation scientist explains the location of where MODIS detected active fires are present across the globe from 20/08/19 - 27/08/19. She explains organisations involved in the development of the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) which provides MODIS 'hotspot' data. The importance of correctly interpreting the 'hotspot' data and how not all hotspots are wildfires. The devastating impact of intense wildfires on flora and fauna around the globe and how satellite data can help inform restoration efforts thereafter using indices such as the differenced Normalised Burn Ratio (dNBR) to locate the most severely burnt areas where natural regeneration of vegetation is less likely to occur.
