Bengali folk music and Bangladeshi migrants in the North-West

Impact: Cultural impacts

For immigrant Bangladeshis arriving in Manchester to work in its mills and factories, collective singing of folk songs similarly provided vital succour in a time of great upheaval. This on-going long term project raises awareness of the rich folk musical heritage of Bangladeshi migrants to the north-west in the 1960s and 70s. The events engage critically with Bangladeshi audiences in and around Manchester, especially the youth, reconnecting them with this music through direct participation (singing/filming), and exposure to their heritage (exhibition&workshops).
