School of Physics & Astronomy

Overview

We are one of the largest and most active Schools of Physics and Astronomy in the UK, with more than 150 academic and research staff, including two Nobel Laureates.

Our research facilities rival those of leading Schools of Physics and Astronomy worldwide.

We are organised into four research divisions, which span the breadth of physics.

  1. Accelerator, Nuclear and Particle Physics
  2. Condensed Matter, Atomic and Biological Physics
  3. Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics and the Jodrell Bank Observatory
  4. Theoretical Physics

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF 2014), 92% of the school's research was rated as of international quality, with 38% world-leading. The volume of world-leading and internationally excellent research places the School 7th in the UK on the REF criteria.
