The Division of Cardiovascular Sciences combines clinical, translational and basic science research with the aim of translating our understanding of the cellular and molecular processes underlying cardiovascular disease into improved clinical treatments and patient care.
We have two fully integrated and interdisciplinary research themes that bring together researchers with common interests and facilitate collaboration across multiple sites.
Our clinicians and scientists closely work together to investigate mechanisms responsible for clinical entities including congenital heart failure and cardiac rhythm disturbances.
Areas covered include experimental cardiology, genetics and development, and clinical cardiovascular research.
Vascular and stroke research
Our vascular research uses multidisciplinary approaches to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying small and large artery function in health and disease.
Stroke research includes translational studies of immune modulation in ischaemic stroke, primary intracerebral haemorrhage and subarachnoid haemorrhage, studies in stroke rehabilitation and implementation into clinical practice.
We aim to develop high-quality research programmes by:
- Developing an integrated bench-to-bedside translational approach, for understanding the underlying mechanisms responsible for the functioning of the cardiovascular system in both health and disease.
- Training future generations of investigators to the highest level, not only in those techniques and concepts traditionally allied to cardiovascular research, but also in complementary methodologies that traverse the disciplinary interfaces.
- Promoting and expanding interdisciplinary bioscience.
We also aim to harness and coordinate people's efforts to produce a step-change in generating new knowledge through cutting-edge research and to translate that knowledge to improve health and reduce inequalities.
We have a breadth of expertise and a commitment to tackle issues of global importance in the field of cardiovascular sciences.
