Department of Physics & Astronomy
Research in the Department of Physics and Astronomy covers a rich portfolio that encompasses most of the subfields of these disciplines.
With access to an incredible array of facilities - including Jodrell Bank Observatory - and strong links to centres and institutes around the world, we consistently produce groundbreaking research.
Our research activities are separated into four key themes that seek to address society’s major challenges:
-
Accelerator, nuclear and particle physics
-
Astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology
-
Condensed matter, atomic and biological physics
-
Theoretical physics
Carrying out this research we have more than 150 academic and research staff, including two Nobel laureates. Our Department boasts a rich heritage in research breakthroughs, and we continue to work with partners in industry, government and academia to push forward.
The latest Academic Ranking of World Universities places us 9th in the world for physics, and 1st in the UK.
