Dalton Nuclear Institute

Overview

The Dalton Nuclear Institute works to enhance the safe and secure supply of affordable, low carbon energy world-wide by developing and delivering the research and skills required to address key challenges in the field of nuclear energy across the entire fuel cycle.

Our expertise is built on a strong research heritage, with a focus on meeting the challenges both of today and of the future. We engage in successful industrial and academic collaboration and deliver a depth and breadth of fundamental and applied research. We bring together world-leading experts across disciplines, such as the fields of radiation science and nuclear engineering, and provide them with access to some of the most extensive and advanced nuclear research facilities in Europe, including our own Dalton Cumbrian Facility.

Our research activities, including the EPSRC-funded five-year New Nuclear Manufacturing (NNUMAN) Programme, together with those undertaken across our full range of research centres, support the competitive growth of the UK nuclear industry through innovation. We carry out research that underpins the safe and extended operation of existing reactors and the future development of safe, secure and sustainable new build nuclear power plant in addition to back end research on spent fuel, decommissioning and waste management.
