Measurement of charged particle multiplicities in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV in the forward region

CERN-LHC. Prompt charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of √s =7 TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity: −2.5<η<−2.0 and 2.0<η<4.5. Two classes of events are selected by requiring at least one track in the full forward
η range for minimum bias events and at least one track with transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c in 2.5<η<4.5 for a subsample of hard QCD events. Prompt charged particles are selected imposing a limit on the sum of the ancestors life time of 10 ps so that final state particles originating in b and
c hadron decays are considered prompt. Charged particle multiplicity distributions in η bins and in the full forward range for the two event classes are given. Also charged particle densities as function of η are shown in the full pseudorapidity range.
