Abstract: This session will take the form of an illustrated presentation packed with musical examples (audio and video). I’ll offer insights into some of the very different kinds of vocal styles found across the globe. We’ll delve into the stories behind particular kinds of sounds, melodies or harmonies and we’ll explore the deeper functions of certain singing traditions or rituals. Musical examples will range from Inuit throat-singing and pearl divers’ songs from Bahrain to Aka hunting songs and multipart songs from Albania. We’ll also consider how knowing something of the back-story might change the way in which we hear or appreciate the songs themselves, and how telling stories about songs in their natural habitat can enrich the way in which we embody songs from other places and share them with others.
